The Carphone Warehouse is today celebrating the renovation of its first ever store on Marylebone High Street with a visit from founder and Chairman, Charles Dunstone and CEO of Best Buy Europe, Andrew Harrison. The new look store has had a complete upgrade and is now the company’s 100th flagship wireless store, kitted out with all the latest technologies required for a wireless life.
Since opening the first store 21 years ago, the company has grown to over 800 stores across the UK and is now a familiar sight up and down British high streets. Back then, the first phone to be sold was the Nokia 101, a chunky piece of technology with a retractable aerial which retailed for £250. An analogue handset, it was unable to send text messages and only held 99 phone numbers in its memory.
Since then, the company has witnessed first-hand the development of mobile technology, right through to smartphones and the recent tablet explosion. Today, the latest release is the HP Touchpad, one of the most exciting entrants to the tablet market which enables multi-tasking, email and search to name just a few of its key functions. 21 years ago the company made £1.2m revenue; now with an annual turnover of £3.5bn, the success of the company is attributed to being at the forefront of these new technologies.
Charles Dunstone, Chairman and founder of The Carphone Warehouse, said “This is a very proud moment for me and the rest of the company. Revisiting our first ever store really shows just how far we have come in 21 years. I still remember serving customers on the shop floor and planning the development of the business from my basement office! We’ve seen some fantastic products pass through our stores, but the real heroes are our employees. With the widest and best range of technologies available and customer service initiatives like Walk Out Working and Network Price Promise, we’re ensuring we continue to inspire and guide in this connected world, making people’s lives better through technology.”
